Call us basic, but we love shopping. Yet no matter how often we go, there’s one thing that is really hard to find: A basic long-sleeve top. You know, one of those tops that just fit right and go with everything? But its so hard to find one to buy that aligns with our moral compass.
It’s important to find clothes that not only make us feel good while wearing them, but make us feel good about buying them.
To find this basic long-sleeve, let’s review our options! Who doesn’t like a little online shopping?
Skims
Sure, Skims’ long-sleeve tops fit great, but they’re sheer enough to see a bra underneath. And on the topic of transparency, the brand’s FAQ gives very vague statements that don’t really say much about their manufacturing practices…
Also, these tops cost $94 CAD, making them quite unaffordable for students and young adults.
Aritzia/Zara
Prices at Aritizia are definitely more affordable, but their tops are still sheer. Furthermore, barely any of their supply chain is certified by crucial labour standards that ensure worker health and safety. In other words, does anyone really want to purchase a top that could be made in a sweatshop? No. So that eliminates Zara from the competition too.
H&M
At H&M, prices are admittedly great. They even have an eco-conscios line! Butttt here’s the catch - this line allegedly has a higher percentage of damaging synthetic materials compared to its main line, and 96% of H&M’s green claims are false. This concept is called greenwashing: when a company advertises its products and policies as being eco-friendly while continuing its exploitative practices behind the curtains.
It’s fast fashion and unsustainable brands like these that lead to 1 garbage truck of textiles being landfilled or burned every second.
What’s Our Solution?
From the heart of Bombay to the streets of the six, Bay6 is a culturally-conscious clothing brand where style meets sustainability. Our company’s philosophy is to limit overconsumption while promoting ethical fashion practices.
We designed 1 shirt that can be styled in 6+ different ways, limiting the need for several different tops.
Our shirt will be created locally by abroad manufacturers that support ethical working conditions for women in India - a commonplace for misogyny and sweatshops.
Our tops come in 2 colours, Kolkata and Udaipur. These are our staple black and white tops that are named after the “Black and White” cities of India.
The fabric of our shirt will be a bamboo, organic cotton, and lycra blend. Our goal is to make the shirt comfortable, breathable, and environmentally friendly.
Here at Bay6, we’re not your basic bitch. We’re a movement towards sustainable, ethical, and culturally rich choices. Subscribe and join us on our journey to help make style matter!
